ALSO would it be possible to mention a few example safe freeware apps that might have problems with XYB, so I can see the problem in action, I would want to check out my existing JPEGs I have to see if they pose any issues!

You are right, not all programs have color decoding taking into account the ICC profile. Therefore, it all depends on where you want to use the JPEG format. For example, on a private website I use the XYB option (JPG as a backup for JXL), because all browsers use ICC, but I cannot use it at work because JOOMLA 3, when he makes thumbnails, he doesn't use ICC and it gets messy.WinnieW wrote: Mon Oct 14, 2024 6:43 pm Yeah, that's helpful for people who use programs that have color profile processing included, like XnView,
but when you create images for other people, people view them with programs you don't know,
it's better not to use XYB color profile, because there are a lot of image viewing apps and programs without proper color profile processing out there, right now.
By the way, WEBP and AVIF (in the future JXL) are used more and more often for websites, so JPEG with XYB is more of a curiosity than a future solution. For non-web applications, JXL has already started to take over the world and will soon completely replace JPEG.

My impression of JXL etc is that they are far too slow to take over the world, it's just not going to happen unless they are made much faster. I'm sure they will be useful in the many situations where that slowness is not an issue though. My impression also is that they only have marginal benefit for high quality pictures. Jpeg has a long life left in it.
