Here is a first attempt...

Comments:
• Allows for displaying more than 1 grid at a time.
• Allows for different line thickness and style (dots, for instance).
• Allows for showing horizontal and vertical lines separately.
• Allows for a fixed number of divisions no matter the image dimensions.
• Allows for both horizontal and vertical offsets.
• Allows for different label styles (A,B,C or 1,2,3, etc.), or no labels.
• Enables "zoom with image"
The default grid would be selected via a drop down in Options->View...
Only advanced ?

Hello John !
• Nice ! I like the predefined grids especially.
- I guess that the very basic features might be grouped together, either on a section of the large box you show, or still as the small existing dialogue (a bit improved) –> Advanced button to get the rest.
- Many variants can be imagined, we have just to find the best one !
- Thanks for the pic, it's already a good start !

Yeh, I know it's too big for most screens (though not mine)...
I couldn't figure out how to logically group the controls if a smaller dialog expanded to a larger one with that Advanced button you proposed, so I just showed every setting I personally would need.
Maybe the Advanced button would display the large dialog entire, instead of expanding a smaller one.
Good idea

Again…

• Yes, this could be the best solution. I saw such a system (in TC "Associate" for with¦without DDE, for instance).
- I'll see your pic & comments again more carefully a bit later, because I'm overworked that evening.
I'll try to draw something as a 2-size box.

Good job, JohnFredC! I like the visual line thickness and the labelling (Spacing, ...). Very clear and well thought through.
Your grid dialog is really flexible and might. It might need some refinement and more discussion, so for the 1.90 I'd suggest to focus on the most important options and have one grid setting, only. Further enhancements might follow in the next release (2.00) of XnView.
From my point of view, the most essential options/Settings currently missing is:
[x] Zoom with image.
Like you I'd expect the grid to zoom with the image - otherwise you can never say someone "Have a look at area E3" unless he has uses the same zoom factor.

Yes very clear

But please not in 1.90...

-> moved to postponed.
More discussion is probably also needed:
- I don't see the need for "[x] Zoom with image" as it should
always be enabled, right?

That's a good question. Probably need to think about that some.

Hi All
I spent quite a bit of time with the grid displayed in XnView today and want to (self) promote my grid options dialog once again.
There are a lot of "technical" viewing aids that no image viewer apparently has (none that I can find, anyway). The ability to have a (much) more flexible grid is one where XnView could immediately leap over everyone else and address a whole new audience (scientists, for instance).
So... bump!

Re-Ordering grids
The grids can be considered as sort of layers. By combining fine and course grids, one could create new types of grids (see
Request: pixel-ruler grid). For combining layers, the order might be essential, so Up/Down buttons for reordering the grids might be good. A "Hide all grids" might be also interesting.
Preview
Some kind of preview would be nice. In addition to "Apply" and "Close" there might be a "Cancel" (not sure whether "Cancel" would help.). Alternatively the grids could be applied immediately.
