Errors in ICO when saving from GIF with transparency

Hi there,

I experience problems with gifs with transparency when using 'Save as' -> .ico-File.
It almost always has a vertical line at the right side of the picture (ico-file), which was not there before in the gif-file.

Anyone experience the same?
Can anyone help?

I am using XnView for windows, version 1.82.4 (Mar 3 2006) and Libformat Version 4.57 with WinXP and Windows Service Pack 2.

Thanks for any help!!
Nick

:) Hello !

• From GIF or another format, there is a problem with *.ico from ages about the transparency…

- XnView doesn't display it for this format, the BG is always either black, or black, or black

- I tested to save a GIF 256 colours with a transparent BG into *.ico.
- The transparency is not rendered, strangely, the BG becomes all grey and the details are lost,
but I don't get the vertical bar you say…

Hi,

thanks for your reply. So are you actually saying, that there is no way to save an ico-File with transparency wtih XnView?
No workaround? What else could it do?

:) Hello !

• You may set the transparency for an icon *.ico max. 8 BPP (256 colours).
- Use the "Image" menu “Edit palette”.

- Set the BG colour as the transparency (tick the box after you have selected the BG) >> OK >> Save.

- On the spot, that works, but when you close ¦ display again that icon, the BG is black…

- However, the transparency is there, you can see it using other viewers…

- IMHO, it's always better to convert a BMP than a GIF to make icons…

Nick, some information that might help solve the problem can be found in this thread: Windows Ico shows pink where transparency expected.
