Difference between Description and Comment?

Hi,

What is the difference between "Description" and "Comment"? I seem to have the version of XnView that does not discuss this in its documentation. Also, why is there no choice to print descriptions with the pictures? I've just spent an hour typing in descriptions, I hope I haven't wasted my time. :|

Description is a text that XnView stores in a file called "descript.ion" in the same folder as the image is stored. Comment is a text that is stored within the image file.

So if you move an image file you might loose the description as it could be left behind. But you would not loose the comment as it is a part of the image file that was moved.

Problem is that not all image formats can handle comments.

IIRC descriptions are stored in seperate "descript.ion" files in the same directory. "Comments" are stored inside the pictures.

Lostclown beat me to it. :)

Copy comment with file

:) Hello !
Problem is that not all image formats can handle comments.
- Hence, it should be nice that the program copies also the comment while it copies / moves the file.
- That exists i.e. in Total Commander (as an option) :
* When you copy a file which has a comment in the <descript.ion> file of the original folder where it's located, another <descript.ion> is created in the target-folder (with the comment of that file as content) if none exists.
* Whether the target folder contains already a <descript.ion> file, the comment of the copied / moved file is simply added into that existing <descript.ion>.

1.74 has already this feature.

Fantastic updating, Pierre. Thank you very much!
I would suggest two more tools: 1) the possibility to copy the descript.ion file automatically when copying the jpg file; 2) the possibility to search for an/more image/s by searching IPTC keyword(s).
Thank you again!
