In XnView 1.90 the user can add a folder and all it's contents, using Tools > Options > Browser > Thumbnails > Cache, button "Add folder..".

I think it would be intuitive and convenient way if the user would have "Add subfolders to cache" in the context menu in the folder tree.

I don't think so. The cache is more like a convenience and not a prominent feature. It should stay in the back.

I don't think that would have much benefit as you might as well just double click on the folder to open it and the thumbnails would load into the cache.

A much better option would be to be able to do this for all subfolders without loading them all into memory at the same time. I don't know if this is possible - have it so that it would move through all the subfolders adding the thumbnails into the cache, when one subfolder has finished move on the next subfolder. The reason I say this is that I have folders with huge amounts (50 gig+) of stock images and it's not practical to use the 'View>show images in subfolders' option because smoke comes out of my pc when I try that

So in other words to automate a way of clicking on subfolder, waiting for thumbnails to load, click on next subfolder, wait for thumbnails to load, click on next subfolder ... etc.

That really would make no sense. The option I mean is "Add subfolders to cache", not "Add folder to cache".

In XnView 1.90 you can pre"feed" the cache using "Tools > Options > Browser > Thumbnails > Tab > "Add folder". Is this what you mean?

Right. Caching is indeed a technical thing and users should not have to care about it. Currently the manual cache feeding is a bit hidden, this is why this idea came to my mind. I would find it very convenient and intuitive but it would indeed spoil the user interface a bit.
