Is it possible to add the functionality to close a tab by clicking an X at the end of the tab? Just like Firefox has?

Ah, may I assume you agree with such a functionality then? I searched for it prior to making the request, but couldn't find it. I just installed the program today and it was the first "annoyance" I came across, I'll let you know if I find more. Keep up the good work!

Right, latest versions of FireFox 2.0, Internet Explorer 7.0 and Eclipse 3.1 offer this for example. I think this gets more and more standard, so this makes sense for XnView, too.

Already, there are several ways to close the current tab, already:
Keyboard: Esc
Keyboard: Ctrl + W
Keyboard: Ctrl + F4
Mouse: Menu item "File > Close"
Mouse: Middle mouse button on tab
Mouse: Right click on tab and "Close this tab"
Mouse: Double left click on tab

It's a bit more intuitive than the above key and mouse button combinations, but it uses up some space. Usually most people have few images open at a time, so I think it would be o.k.. And perfect if it was configurable.

It is room consuming, agreed.

My preference is to use the double LMB click to close the tab instead of 'X'

You could of course use a higher screen resolution to negate room consumption

I know there are key combinations, but each program tends to have different hotkeys and I don't want to learn new keycombinations for each program I use.

I knew about the ctrl+w as it is indicated in the menu, however, the esc option does help too. A X on the tab is probably also more of a "go with the flow" thing and isn't that bad at all IMHO.


PS1: what is "strfg" on your keyboard???
PS2: middle mouse button is often configured as an auto-scroll feature and xnview has not changed that functionality, so that doesn't work for me either.

Ooops, "Strg" is German for "Steuerung" and supposed to be "Ctrl" for English "Control". I've corrected the above post.

• Yes, and also mount a microscope in front the screen to read the texts
and to see the small icons in the programmes I use!
• Like I said above, double LMB click does the trick for me, and optional should make everybody happy !

higher resolution is only logical on a bigger screen so that the relative decrease of lettersize\icon size is smaller.

optional works for me

In firefox, the [x] only shows up when you hover over a tab. iirc Opera works that way as well. So the extra space taken up would only be when the mouse is hovering over the tab, if done that way. I'd personally hate having an x at all times, but wouldn't mind it showing up on hover at all.

Optional is easy but it's a cop-out unless there's no viable alternative; it's worth bearing in mind the question of whether it's worth adding to an already overcrowded options panel. Sometimes features should be cut instead of implemented half-baked as options, as well.

• I've Opera V. 9.10 French (8 hours spent to correct the FR-file…), and the [x] button is always displayed…
- The settings are a pain in the b**, and I use that browser as a subsidiary one for some special cases only.
- So, it's possible I have missed some option to get the [x] button like you say…

• From my point of view, even an INI entry to change by hand could do the trick as option,
it shouldn't cause a too big work for Pierre…
