xnview 1.93.6 hangs after first click

Been using program for several weeks, and love it. It works fine on 4 identical PCs.. however today it stopped working on one of them.
Just hangs after first click. I tried reinstalling, uninstalling, rebooting, etc. no matter what, after first click on the folder pane or an image, it just HANGS.. you must kill it. trying process monitor and I see nothing interesting in the output.. I'll try reg-mon tomorrow, but any other tips??
no cpu, nothing, just hangs.
this is win2k sp4 with latest xnview-english. Like I said, it has worked perfectly fine on this PC for several weeks. not sure 'what changed'...
Thanks.
xnview 1.93.6 hangs on opening invalid PNG image (orig jpg)

Ok, I figured it out...
Take a jpg image, rename it to .png, now go to that directory, and xnview will just hang, forever.. no cpu, no nothing.. just hangs..
I'm very happy I found the root cause of the hang!!! but others may have difficulties..

b1: Renamed image stops thumbnail rendering
I don't see it anymore (on emulator), maybe it is only on Win2k?

YES! exactly the right thread!
I'm on Win2k, and it's very easy to reproduce:
- Attempt to view a misnamed .jpg (call it .png)
- Make sure there is not already a thumbnail for that image.
- Make sure 'recognize only by extension' is enabled in the options->file list-Misc is ON.
interesting part is that xnview just HANGS.. no cpu, etc.
but now I have a workaround, unset 'recognize only by extension'.
Would still be nice to fix this not to hang...

You open xnview on a misnamed .jpg, and rename it in view mode? And after you go to the browser?

just follow the 3 conditions: rename the image, startup vnview, go to that folder, now it will hang. very simple.
just make sure you have the option to check by extension. and also make sure it's a new image, one that no thumbnail exists yet for it.

But xnview start in view mode, fullscreen mode?

no, in browser mode, on the LEFT side, navigate to the folder holding that misnamed jpg (call it .png) and then xnview will hang.. you can't even go to other folders, then u must go to taskmgr and kill the program.

0. in options Browser->file list->Misc, change recognize only by extension to YES
1. close xnview completely
2. rename a .jpg image you never viewed before to .png remember the folder this image is at
3. startup xnview and on the left sidebar navigate to that folder.
4. it will now hang, only way to get out is kill in task-mgr

To me it happens all the time on all my win2k machines using the above steps. I also asked others to see if they can provide more info from the original thread:

Thanks!

Ok, i have found the problem, only on win2k, it's a problem with windows explorer. For other files, i ask system to send the thumbnail. I have some dead lock on windows explorer too on this file too...
