crash on startup, browse

For about two weeks I've been unable to open XnView other than by selecting an image and using the contect menu to 'Open with...'.
If I use the shortcut or if I go directly to the .exe, I get this error message while it's starting:
Similarly, if I have opened using an image, but select Browse view, it gives the same error.

Perhaps your program file got corrupted for some reason. Or the thumbnail cache might contain invalid data. Or XnView starts up in a directory with a corrupted image which crashes XnView.
Could you please uninstall and reinstall XnView and see if the problem persists?

Please try to drag&drop a picture file to xnview icon. Does this crash, too?

Okay. Is there anything I should do aside from making a backup copy of the database?

Pierre, this process works fine with the four images I tried. It also allows the Browser function. Does that help pinpoint the problem?

Does the browser start in the same directory as your four images?

And if you restart xnview, the browser start in the same directory and crash, right?

If I start by clicking the shortcut, it crashes immediately, before the program window appears.

Have you tried to remove xnview.ini? xnview.db?
Do you have only jpeg files in this folder?

I haven't removed anything yet, but am ready to do so if that's the next step you'd suggest.
