When I try convert .bmp or .jpg to the tiff file format, nconvert outputs a tif file and gives no errors. When I try and open the file in Windows Imaging I am given the error message 'The documents format is invalid or not supported' with the jpg and 'An internal error has occurred' with the bmp. I am using the command

nconvert -o output.tif -out tiff -c 2 input.jpg

The results are the same wether I use compression or not as well as when specifying the input type or not. Is there anything wrong with my method or is there something I need to know about converting from jpg and bmp to tiff?

Strange, which version do you use?
