NEF too dark?

when I shoot indoors on my D80, the camera shows a fine pic. When I move the NEF to Xnview, it shows up much darker. Is there an issue with how XnV shows raws?
I see the same thing with Pentax raws, but not such a big drop.

I guess you mean camera RAW not RAW
What does auto brightness do?
I don't know how to set the gamma etc bottom 4 boxes
I tried crazy stuff like brightness 0.1 and it makes no diff to the view..

Try 'auto balance' or 'camera balance' or 'auto brightness'

It's the jpeg that you see, try 'half size', and change RAW settings

thanks. This confuses me. I was seeing the jpeg, but the jpeg is also 100% size? I thought jpeg was only thumbnail size.
I have some Q about settings for RAW
Gamma is 2.2
what's the 'standard' setting for brightness?
what is 'high resolution'
