PSP Image

I Just installed XnView 1.96 on my Vista 32 bit machine.
I can view almost any image, music and video file, however when i try to view a file with the extension PSP (Paint Shop Pro), I am getting a blank image instead of the actual image. According to the documentation it supposes to support this file type (and this is the main reason I installed it). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance
Stall

Thank you XnTriq,

I saw that posting, it does not offer a solution, nor does it say if there is a problem. Are you suggesting that the PSP files I have were created with an older version of Paint Shop Pro (v7) and therefor are not recognized by XnView?

BTW. I did check the "Display all image file types" as you suggested on a different posting. I restarted the application, but still getting a white image.

Thanks Again,
Stall

OK, I've done some testing with .PSP v7/8/9 images (layered & non-layered) and also .PspShape files: No problems :?

I think we have to wait for Pierre.

PSP format has changed, and some new psp files are not loaded correctly...

Thank you Pierre, and welcome back.

M y PSP file was created by version 7 of Paint shop pro ( I even have files from version 6).
Does it mean that I cannot view them using XnView, or is it something that you are going to fix?

Also, I don't have Paint shop pro on my computer any more. Does it require to be installed in order to view it using the XnView?

Thanks again,
Stall

coldfax1000,

could it be that Paint Shop Pro's Thumbnail Shell Extension...
  • %CommonProgramFiles%\Jasc Software Inc\JascThumbShellExt\JascThumbShellExt.dll or
    %CommonProgramFiles%\Corel\PSPThumbShellExt\PSPThumbShellExt.dll
... is still installed on your system?

Do you use PSP Thumbnail Handler?
  • %ProgramFiles%\PSP Thumbnail Handler\PSPThumb.dll

Hi XnTriq

Thank you for getting back to my issue.

I just got a new computer, and it doesn't have any instalation of Paint Shop Pro on it, neither Jasc nor Corel.
This is basically the main reason i am trying to use the XnView, so I can view these PSP images.

And No, I do not have "PSP thumbnails handler"

If XnView cannot display that images, is there another option I can use? (other then having PSP installed on my computer)

Thanks again
Stall

It seems that these files have no merged picture, could you send me a sample?

Hi Pierre

I sent you one image to <removed>.

I think that the issue is with large pictures. I was able to view PSP images with the size of 5 MB or smaller
The attached one is over 10 MB. Can this be the issue?

In any case, thank you so much for everything.

Hi Again Pierre,

Sorry, but I cannot send you the image. It is too large for this mail, and it keeps bouncing back.

Just wanted to tell you that I found a PSP image of 22 MB that I can view. So the size is not the issue. Maybe something is wrong with these particular images.

Sorry for all the hassle, and thanks again for all the support

I have psp7 (I tried psp8 when it came out, but reverted to the older & much better v7. I flatly refuse to touch v8+ again. They completely ruined the prog. They made it massively slow & bloated & F~ed up the interface.).
When I open a psp image made with v7 in xnview, it displays the background layer (and ONLY the background layer). So, if your psp's background layer is white (or any other solid color), then you will just see a white (or other color) image.
Ideally, xnview should merge the layers when displaying such images (the same way it does with similar psd images).

It's something of a moot point though, unless the person who originally saved the image was foolish. The only 2 reasons to use the psp format in the first place is layers and/or vectors. However, no prog other than psp itself properly supports layers or vectors in psp images (especially vectors). As such, there's no point trying to open a psp image which contains vectors or layers in any non-psp prog. On the flipside, if the image doesn't contain layers or vectors, then there was no point saving it as psp in the first place. Png, tiff, or jp2 would have been much better choices.
