IPTC indicator on thumbnail view not clearing

Using Windows XP SP2. In either 1.96.0 or 1.96.1, for a jpg image, after entering IPTC caption, IPTC 'indicator' on thumbnail properly appears. But if it is cleared, the indicator remains. Irfanview does show it cleared, but thumbnail view in XNVIEW still shows indicator, but detail view tab does properly not show for IPTC. Tried refresh too.
Tried 'clear all' in Edit IPTC, then XMP indicator comes on, and XMP tab displays following:

Any ideas on this? Has the image been corrupted now?
