Copying JPEG-Comment to IPC-Caption not possible with some i

Hello,
yesterday I've copied the JPEG-Comments of about 700 images to the IPTC-Caption-Field with XnView. However, there were 4 images where the comment was not copied to the caption field with no error message at all. Instead of that an "image.jpg.tmp"-file was created. When I tried to write the field manually, no saving of the IPTC-data was possible. I created all of my JPEG-comments with IrfanView some time ago. The described behaviour was no problem at all, because it only occured with 4 files, where I created the field manually with IrfanView afterwards.
I don't know where the fault is and I don't think that XnView is the reason of the problem, but I would like to know if anyone of you has an idea why it wasn't possible to write the IPTC-Caption. The files were not read only, are from different sources (cameras) and were not modified in any way, exept of the writing of the JPEG-comment in IrfanView.
Best regards and thanks for such an great software! I had no idea how to convert all of my JPEG-Comments to IPTC-Captions since I found XnView!

Would be great if someone could reply, I have now uploaded an image where the error ist reproducable:
http://www.traumnarben.de/download/bild080.jpg
Maybe it's a bug of XnView, and I would like to know what's the reason of this behaviour before I convert further pictures.
Thank you and best regards,
Christoph

Yes, I'm using Version 1.98.2. You can reproduce the behaviour with the linked image.

Maybe there's a problem with the umlaut in the JPEG comment (“Auf der H
ängematte im Garten”).
We'll have to wait for Pierre (the developer of XnView)

I had the same issue with images without umlauts. Meanwhile I have tried to copy the comment to the IPTC-Caption with Exiftool, and in the summary Exiftool showed me that two files were written, although there was just one file - the linked image - in the folder. I have read about the issue with MPO-files, but the affected images were single images from different sources and the only thing I did with them was adding comments with IrfanView.
Best regards,
Christoph

Hmm, very strange! Another strage thing is that only 4 of about 700 images are affected. It's no problem to write IPTC-Fields to them with other applications, but I wonder what's so special about them that XnView cannot write the Fields.

Christoph

No more ideas or suggestions? I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with the 4 images, and I want to make shure that XnView does a reliable job on my other images. Can I assume that my other pictures, where the comments have been copied, are completely okay, or is it possible that e.g. something in the jpeg-header is messed up? I have a backup of my images at the state before i copied the comments to iptc with XnView, does it make sense, to copy the original files back before the issue is solved? I'd like to start to enter IPTC-Captions to my newer images with XnView in the future and hope that there's a simple explanation for the behaviour. XnView is a great program with mostly all the features I need and I want to use it as the main software for editing my images.
Best regards and thank you,
Christoph

Thanks for the reply and fixing it! Could you give me a feedback on what the reason for this behaviour is and if it would be better to repeat the copying of the Comments to the IPTC-Field completely on the original files from my backup, or do you think that the other files where the error didn't occured are okay?
Best regards and thanks for the great work,
Christoph

The problem is with a big XMP data...

But none of my images was containing XMP-Data. The only stepts I made were
- loading the images from the camera
- adding comments with IrfanView
- copying the comments to iptc with XnView, which in 4 cases failed
Best regards and thanks,
Christoph

Hello again

,
it would be great if someone could answer my questions regarding the reliability of the IPTC-writing of the last XnView-Version and maybe what could be the reason of the strange behaviour on my 4 images. I want be absolutely shure that nothing is messed up in my image-library when I start to add IPTC-descriptions to my newer pictures.
@Pierre: When I copied the Comments to IPTC, the field for writinf XMP-Data was unchecked in the IPTC-configuration.
Best regards,
Christoph
