XnView Software

just looking into setting up a digital asset management system for a large collection of scanned stills. have used xnview and nconvert for simpler things like batch conversions and such. i love the cross-platform nature of xnview in its various flavors and am curious as to how usable it might be as a tool for managing this archive. several questions:

can i use mp to apply metedata in batches?
can i search an archive by metedata?
can i create collections?

If you mean ratings/stars, colors and keywords/categories, yes.
You can do it by using mouse and/or shortcuts - also you have a compare window in which you can do your rating and/or coloring.
(Feel free to post here feedback, improvements & RFCs). IMHO, Compare Window is good now, but can be much better.

If you mean IPTC for the formats which supports this (ie. JPG, TIFF), yes.

If you mean to add/edit photo comments, yes.

can i search an archive by metedata?

If you mean on-disk search on a gazillion of EXIF/IPTC tags, then yes. On-disk search is well designed, and relatively fast but, of course, slow compared with an in-DB search which will be near-to-realtime.

In 0.60, just one: The tagged files.
...but one of the important database redesigns was support for Albums/Collections in 0.56->0.60 release. Now the DB backend is ready (I hope) and in the next release (I hope ) we'll have a GUI for these.

hmm. just installed the dmg and it crashes when i try to open after the install.
this is on a:

mac pro 1,1
osx 10.6.8 32bit

does 0.60 require something newer?

just noticed that the download seems to be 64 bit only. will this change or am i stuck? i have four macs here, all 32 bit and mp doesn't run on any.

says 32 & 64 bit. Try once again, be more attentive at unpacking etc. ...but perhaps Pierre forgot to put the 32bit build in the package or so. It happens. He monitors these forums and usually he answers and fix quickly such problems. Unfortunately it seems than he's now in holidays for one-two weeks. Try to contact him directly through email sending him the link to this thread.

i actually did try more than once with different downloads: once from the main mp site download link and another time from the link at the top of this forum, though, they may link to the same file. the link on this forum i noticed says only 64 bit. the link on the website says both. windows notes distinct 32 and 64 bit downloads. the mac download is a single one.

on the mac there's not much to the unpacking. if its tar or tgz it just extracts to a single app icon, nothing else. the dmg (disk image) download does pretty much the same. on the mac that's a mountable image that opens with a window and, again, a single app icon with a graphic option to drag the app to the user's applications folder. no indication whether the app is 32 or 64 bit.

i'm wondering if there's something funny going on like you have to hold the 'option' key (alt on pc) while opening the file to get it to open as 32 bit. would be odd but, barring a mistaken omission of the 32 bit version it's all i could think of.

Yes, most probably it is an oversight. AFAIK he triggers manually the builds. He develops with the Win 32bit build and when this is close to release then builds and packages for other platforms. For example, I know that Win 64bit counts as a separate platform. OTOH, it could depend on what OS do you have. For ex. CMake has different package for different (older eg. Tiger) Mac OSX variants:

Could you try to download it (it is a small program), install and see what's working for you?
