Hello,

That's the first time I ask for something here, so I'll try to be as precise as possible :

I don't know wether it's a bug or if it's normal (you can move my post according to that if I'm wrong) but when I'm trying to open TIFF pictures (multipages) I just get a black screen (I mean all the picture is in black but not my screen actually).

The point is when I open them with windows preview/Irfanview it works normally.

Another crucial (maybe) point is when I rotate these pictures with win preview, I can then open them with XnView... but their size is increased three times than before rotating

I have the same problem with XnConvert if that can help!

The ideal would be if you could upload a sample file, but as the current forum attachment limit is 1MiB that could be difficult; do you have or can you create a small enough example file that shows the problem, or could you upload a file to a file hosting service and provide a link?

Do you know which program the files were created in, and whether the same issue applies to single-page files, which would be rather smaller? If opening the file in another program and then saving it overcomes the problem, that suggests a quirk in the original program used to create the files that isn't recognised in XnView software.

If the pixel dimensions of the images are very large, the limit to the amount of ram that can be addressed in a 32-bit system could be reached, although I'm not sure if other software could handle memory differently.

Here is one of the problematic file : http://ovh.to/YsrPud5 (not even so large that one) I've tried on a 16gb RAM Win 7 64b as well but I got the same result.

The files are created in Panoptiq (it scans microscopic blades). I don't know why the pictures are multipage ones but anyway I can't obtain single-page pictures with that software (settings are really limited).

The picture is not completely black : a small mosaic of some zones of the picture appears on the left side

The file you uploaded is a tiled TIFF with JPG compression, the first image has quite large pixel dimensions but the following images are smaller.

There has evidently been a problem with similar files in the past as in the following post:

http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=26063

It would appear that the issue hasn't been resolved yet, which seems surprising if other readily available viewers can open the file...

I can confirm cday's observation that Panoptiq seems to produce JPEG-encoded pyramidal (tiled multi-resolution) TIFFs.

thank you for your answers even if they can't solve my problem for the moment, I hadn't catched that the other posts were about the same problem sorry for that.

Do you know why rotating the pictures allow me to open them with XnView? Is the rotation process (with win preview) changing completely my files?

Yes, I think so. Windows Photo Viewer seems to extract the “page” with the highest resolution and re-saves it either uncompressed or with a more common but less effective compression method.

I would like to refresh this topic. I've encountered similar problems with TIFFs which are aerial photos. They are opened by XnView MP 0.98.3 as black. Windows 10 builtin Photos app opens those files without problem. AFAIK those are tiled TIFFs.
