Update XMP sidecars erase Lightroom info

Hi.
I am using the “menu View > Update files from database” function to add keywords, but it's a problem:
When I transfer my photos from my SD card to my computer, I have two files: the RAW and the JPG. I import those files in Lightroom and make the colour corrections and other settings. When I quit Lightroom all those settings are memorized inside an XMP sidecar file. In this case, if I lose my Lighroom database or I send my photos to another colleagues, his Lighroom will open the RAW files with all my settings and development modifications.
Now I have 3 files: RAW+JPG+XMP side by side.
I open now XnViewMP to give them keywords by the Categories.
After done, I make: “menu View > Update files from database”
And appear a disaster, because the XMP file is not really “updated”, but “replaced”.
So, when I re-open my files in Lightroom, all my settings and development modifications are lost !
Is it possible that the Update files from database function, will update only the keyword section of the XMP file? And let all the data in the other sections created by others softwares, untouched?
Thanks
