Where are "categories" written?

I'm a new user exploring the cataloguing capabilities of xnviewmp.
I've just clicked on category "friends" for a given image and
checked that I can filter using this category.
Nevertheless, I visualize the XMP window and do not see the category anywhere.
Where is this information being actually written? It is important in terms of
compatibility

Also, I've seen there is an option "update or create XMP sidecar" in Settings/Metadata
If this option is selected, would the "category" information be saved to the sidecar file only
or would it be written to the jpg or or tif file as well? I would prefer saving the information
into both files (unless you think this could cause problems).

Thanks
Agus

Depeding on settings>Metadata. By default categories are written in the catalog of XnView, but you can write them in the file itself or sidecar

it will be saved in the sidecar

And when you add a category on jpeg file, no XMP categories??
where is the xnview DB file? which type of db is it?
In Settings>Integration>Paths, you have 'open catalog location'

I might have a misunderstanding here:
And when you add a category on jpeg file, no XMP categories??
I thought that just by selecting a given "Category", i.e., "Friends", the comment was automatically added.
Do I have to select and then "add"? In that case, how do I "add" the comment?
(there is no user manual or tutorial, is it?)

Regarding the db
In Settings>Integration>Paths, you have 'open catalog location'
what kind of db is it? does it use open source software (i.e., mysql or PostgreSQL) ?
Thanks

If you select a category, it will be added in XMP metadata
I do not understand. Then, why don't I see it in the XMP? "Friends" is selected but not present in the XMP
