I just came home from tobogganing (good fun) and converted some of the pictures taken. When doing so, I've stumbled over the following thing (the description got a bit lengthy):
When using "Save as" for saving an image, XnView opens the "Save as" dialog. In the "Save as" dialog the last used directory is shown. But I didn't need the last used directory but the directory of the current image. So I've canceled the "Save as" dialog and changed the appropriate option "Tools > Options > General > For "Save as" use same original pathname & format. Then I triggered "Save as", again, and voila, the folder of my image was shown. In fact I wanted to save in a subfolder of the current image, so I changed to the subfolder and saved.
So far so good. Then, I've made some corrections on the next image and saved it, again. And you guess it: In the "Save as" dialog, the path of the original image was shown, not the subfolder which I have used last.
With options currently available, my "problem" cannot be solved. What is needed is some cleverness of XnView, I think: When starting XnView, opening a file and saving it, XnView should use the path of the image. And when saving next time (without exiting XnView), it should use the directory last used.
I think this behaviour would support users in a good way and I would find this intuitive. Not sure, whether there has to be put more smartness and options to get a good usability for all users. We might even get rid of the option "For "Save as" use same original pathname & format".

Perhaps it's a problem if you don't have "After save as change filename"??helmut wrote:I just came home from tobogganing (good fun) and converted some of the pictures taken. When doing so, I've stumbled over the following thing (the description got a bit lengthy):

No, that's a different issue.xnview wrote:Perhaps it's a problem if you don't have "After save as change filename"??helmut wrote:I just came home from tobogganing (good fun) and converted some of the pictures taken. My solution---
• Hi !
- Despite you don't like it at all, I had planned a feature which could solve this issue in this proposal where an altenative path to save is planned with a "Save HERE" field…
- Aside : Let's notice that a second alternative #2002 dialogue is quite possible; this exists in some libraries written in the same programming language, each item -dialogue, string-table- is double (for two languages, but the principle is the same).
A single optional additional dialogue shouln't be “the sea to drink”…

If you have "Use filename after save as", there is no problem... No?helmut wrote:No, that's a different issue.

Once again, hopefully easier to understand:
In XnView, the setting "Use same path as original image" is checked.
1. I start XnView, open an image do some conversion and now want to save it.
2. XnView suggests the folder of the original image (which is good), I save in a subfolder of it.
3. I close the image
4. In the browser I open another image, do some conversion and want to save this second file.
5. XnView suggests the folder of the original image, but I wanted to save in the same subfolder as in step 2.
In step 2 it's good to have the option "Use same path as original image" is checked. But in step 4 it's not good, it would be better if the folder that I have used last was suggested.
As written above: With options currently available, this problem cannot be solved.
When starting XnView, opening a file and saving it, XnView should use the path of the image. And when saving next time (without exiting XnView), it should use the directory last used.

Perhaps path should be updated only when 'After Save As, change filename' is used. It sounds like the same issue to me.xnview wrote: Perhaps it's a problem if you don't have "After save as change filename"??

Not changing filename after "Save as" is like a bug to me. I have this option always checked.marsh wrote:Perhaps path should be updated only when 'After Save As, change filename' is used. Re: Default folder for saving
Yes, but these new options are related. When one updates to new filename, it makes sense to update path (thus directory saved to) then as well. I don't think it is necessary to update directory when 'change filename' in not used, since the original stays at same location.helmut wrote:Not changing filename after "Save as" is like a bug to me.
