Well, the subject says it all...
If I start XnViewMP while the categories filter pane has been activated, the latter is completely empty.
If I switch to another pane, and then back to categories filter all is shown (Rating, Colour Label etc.)
Win7Prof 64 bit

Yes. At evey XnView's startup.
I even did a Win startup in-between (you never know).
Would like to annotate that only yesterday I installed XnView
for the very first time ... so wouldn't have occation to damage too much since...
Can't you reproduce?

It's (only) located in my user folder.
I have full access.
No problems in renaming.

Oh, I thought you had a rights problem in mind, so re-re-named before start.
OK, rename, start => produces a new ini (14k, instead of 17k), error gone.
Strange, I absolutely did no mystic things in that one day since installation.

It worked for some time.
Then, without having done anything "unusual" in the last session,
when restarting the pane is empty again

Strange, in the settings, 'category filter' panel is not visible, if i use your settings on Win7, at first startup the 'category filter' is empty, but as soon as i click on 'Folder' tab and 'Category filter', and quit, all will be ok on next startup...

Yes, I make the same experience:
Sometimes (most times) it is not there, sometimes it is there again.
Only one thing is for sure:
If I SWITCH TO the categories pane, it is never empty.
The effect only occurs (sometimes) when starting up MP and the pane is activated already.
Maybe of any help for you?

Can confirm on XnView MP 1.8.8
I can't confirm it on newer version because PortableApps.com didn't released yet XnView MP 1.9.2, so I apologise for that, but I firmly believe that 1.9.2 is affected too.
It's really annoying, so I hope that it will be fixed soon. And it is called Catalog Filter, not Categories Filter.
Screenshot showing the issue:
Best regards, Alexandra.
