I've noticed that file renaming in browser mode is not as clean as it could be:

• When you are renaming a file, the textbox with the new name sits on top of a greyed-out textbox with the old name. This is pretty weird-looking and I don't think this is the intended behavior. It seems that the greyed textbox with the old name should disappear while the file is being renamed.
• When a file is being renamed, it would be much more helpful if the default selected text is the filename without the extension. Since users won't (shouldn't) be renaming the extension of the file, the default text selection should not include the file extension. As it is right now, renaming a group of files takes longer than it should because the extension has to be typed in every time. Removing the extension from the default selected text would definitely streamline the renaming process.

Strange, I don't have these 'problems'. If you change it, next time it's OK, or not?

The actual file renaming works fine - my two points were actually related to the graphical interface.

Why not add the same dialog as in Viewer/FS? There are more bugs with the current behavior. What other users think about it?

What do you mean by "Viewer/FS"?

View mode / Fullscreen mode, press F2 in Fullscreen to check.

I actually like having the little editbox - it's much more streamlined and much less intrusive than a dialog box. I would rather see the same editbox with the updated default text selection...

I would prefer to keep the editbox to edit the name in place (if possible selection without file-extension), as TheEvilHammer said.

You can read my recent blahblah here.

To make it short: I'm one of those: "only hidden extensions are good extension"-guys.

But Helmut? This threat is older than the other one! whatever..

To follow your suggestions here: I'd also think the whole renaming-window from Viewer/FS is a little too much for the Browser. Maybe one could make it just the way it is but with an extra box for the extension. So you cannot overwrite it accidentially.

Finally I'd think the best solution whould be to just use the windows settings: If explorer saiys no extensions : show no extensions in xnView as well... But OK: Here are ones that don't think so. Because everyone has to know whats ""behind""!! ;]

Now If you want the extesions shown by default thats fine with me. But there should be an option to disable them. Maybe also display a Huge warning!! I don't care :] I just want to get rid of them.

Btw: I read the whole thread: I cannot see what the "bug" was TheEvilHammer was talking about. But I have another problem what is best described by some screenies ;]:

If a namefield of an item you want to rename in thumbnailview is on the very lower border of the pane the renaming shows nothing even if you type in it.

I think that renaming using a dialog box for both browser and image view is good. It makes things consistent and it's much easier to keep the file extension untouched.
