duplicate images in category view

When I open some categories there are duplicate thumbnails. When I go to the folder, there is only one file listed for each one that's duplicated in the category view, so I know the actual files are okay and figure the thumbnails have been messed up somehow.
What is the best way to fix this?

Do you use 'base path'?

Thank you for the quick response. I have to admit I don't know if I used 'base path" or not because I'm not sure what that is. Sorry.
I've decided to rebuild the catalogue and thumbnails (backed them up first) - using the process described here - or as close as I can get with the current version of XnViewMP. I think that should fix this problem, and maybe a few others as well
