Right, but perhaps i can ask a designer...
Yes, maybe the same designer who created new default toolbar skin.

I don't want completely new style too, just few improvements, now it looks too "Win 98"

Maybe just try to change that grey colour to white or other, it would be better, also a higher res. icon is needed I think.

Xnview's current icon already goes up to 48x48.

Try these: Image Image Image

Note: This icon has alpha transparency. Those of you viewing this with M$IE won't see it. To see the icon properly, either view this page with a decent browser (opera, or any gecko based one, such as mozilla, firefox, or netscape), or download it and view it in an image viewer capable of displaying alpha channel transparency (interestingly, that doesn't include xnview. You'll have to use the "evil" irfanview to see it.)

Here's how it should look, notice the translucent dropshadow:

It's not possible :-(

Personally, I like the current logo. That said, there's always room for improvement.
With all the competition going on nowadays — even among freeware viewers — the first impression is crucial, and usually the potential new user gets that first impression from a screenshot or the icon.
If the goal is to broaden the user base for XnView, tweaking the looks would probably help.

So, what are the options? Leaving the icon as it is, updating it to make it more “XP-ish” or giving it a complete overhaul.
The main reason why I would go for the latter are the striking similarities to the logotypes of other graphics software, e.g. Auto FX and especially iView.
A unique program deserves a unique logo.

Unfortunately there are hundreds if not thousands of corporate logos utilizing an eye or spirals. It takes a really talented designer to create an eyecon that sticks out. One of the few good examples would be the logotype for AlienSkin Eye Candy 5.

IMHO the designs for the logo, the filetype icons and the default skin should be carried out by the same one artist.
As far as I can tell everybody agrees that the Mezich skin kicks some serious butt. Maybe we could set up a PayPal tip jar to raise some $$ so Pierre can either hire them or use it as prize money for a WinRAR Theme Contest kind of thing.

And while we're at it: I'd suggest to replace the default skin with it or at least put it on the official screenshots (assuming there are no license or copyright issues involved).

+ + +

And now, Ladies & Gentlemen, brace yourself as it's time once again to throw in another one of my dreaded lists of related bookmarks:

Thank you, XnTriq, for this excellent post. You've doubled the number of links to other sites in this forum. ;-)

Honestly, the topic and your links are very valuable. Contacting some designers and/or making a design contest would be a good idea. Currently Pierre is very busy getting the 1.82 finished and an other project done, so it might take a while till actions regarding skins and icon design are taken.

Not really. Your above topic is really a master piece which we rarely have here. Must have taken you a while to write it up and find its links.
If you would put a little bit less work into posts, we are still able to read it and you aren't that disappointed if nothing happens ;-)

What I really don't like about the icon (not the logo) is the square "button" grey background: probably just removing it would make a great difference.

A bit offtopic, but related:
I've just placed the original XnView logo as vector graphic (EPS, 400kb) on the download server.

Before, there had been a CorelDraw logo "xnview.cdr", but that had been genererated by tracing the bitmap logo and converting it back to vector format.

Conversion to other vector formats (.ai, .psd, ...) is on the way.

All non-official logos have been moved to subfolder "non-official".

Yes. That's really the main problem with the current icon. Not so much an issue with the logo itself.
