I've noticed this bug in 1.5.3 and find the thread about it: viewtopic.php?p=190443

It's "fixed" in 1.5.4 but not for text file.

To repo:

Put one text file and one image file in a folder. Say, 1.txt, 2.jpg
Open the image.

Expected: go prev/next, it shouldn't show the text file content.
Observed: it shows text file. And it also hajacks left/right arrow which makes it more annoying since you can't easily go back.

I have exactly the same problem with 1.5.3, 1.5.4 and the new 1.5.5
It's supposed to be fixed but it's not and it shouldn't open a text file.
I have gone back to 1.5.2 and it works perfect.

Oh thanks, my bad for not searching first. I was fixated on viewtopic.php?p=190443 and thought surely it hasn't be reported if that ticket didn't fix it.


Edit: I guess there is a slight difference: that ticket is about buttons not working, but it shouldn't go to text file in viewer mode in the first place.

you can disable that in >=1.5.4:
Settings > View > Filter

Thank you I'll need to remember that, it was driving me nuts since 1.5.3. Once a text file is displayed you're basically stuck, can't show anything next so ESC was the only option.
XnView is great but there's TONS of settings in there so it's very easy to be lost and not notice the new ones

Thanks to your detailed description I can reproduce the problem.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.6.0. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

I had kind of a similar issue here, I wanted the texts to show up in the preview not in View mode. 1.60 fixed that even though "preview" option in prefs>file list no longer exist. So I don't know what's the magic here but I can confirm it works
Also I'm lucky to have this post in my tabs, version 1.60 is not ready yet for an official release I guess ? I already adopted it anyway ^^

checkboxes combined: visible in filelist = visible in preview (ref)
