XnView Software

I started using XnView MP as a DAM software for my photo collection recently. I set categories (mostly names of people) on my pictures. XnView writes the XMP files which is what I want, so that the RAW editing software I use afterwards can load them.

My process is as follows. I select one or more pictures in the list and then I click on the desired categories to assign them to the pictures. Here is where the problem I am having starts. To trigger writing down the XMP files to the disk I select another/next picture that I want to assign categories to. It takes some time for the operation to complete, which is understandable. The problem is that after writing is finished, the images I already selected become unselected. The result is that I need to actively wait until the unselecting happens in order to select the same new pictures again. This makes the operation of tagging images very annoying.

Please kindly change this behavior of images being unselected. Also please let me know if another way exists for triggering of writing the XMP files, e.g. keyboard shortcut, instead of selecting other pictures.

I can't reproduce. On which format?

It is on the Nikon NEF files. The JPG is doing this as well.
Would the unselecting of selected image be happening because of what image format was having XMP files written for earlier?

i can't reproduce. post a screenshot of Settings>Metadata? and how do you assign categories?

I have attached the screen shots. They are in reverse order, but I added descriptions with numbers.

clicking on any file resets the current selection - is standard behavior that should not be changed

You didn't get my point I think. The whole issue is about my selection being unselected without my direct interaction. Unselection happens after XnView finishes writing XMP files.

4. Selected picture becomes unselected (undesired behavior).

step 3 is your "direct interaction", press F5 instead

ps. if companoin files are visible (not your case) - hide them or disable new files autoselection in Settings.

could you try to disable 'Settings>File list>Automatically select new files' or hide the companion files

What does this option suppose to do? Where can I read documentation of all the options and features?

when files are added, there are selected

Like any files added to a folder, even XMP files, which are not images and are not visible in the application?
