Filter vs. Items displayed

I just had the following case which really confused me:
I browsed a folder with *.avi files, but these where not displayed for some reason. I've looked up in Options, category "Items displayed", but all looked nice. Finally I found that I've set filter to "Images" in a session before.
I think it's confusing to have "Items displayed" on one hand and "Filter" on the other. Is there really a need for "Filter > Images", "Filter > Video", ...?

IMO it is nice (having both). You can treat filter as a shortcut to some specific 'Items displayed' settings. It is useful if you sometimes deal with directories with contents that significantly differ from your 'usual' directory pattern.
For example you set some settings for your media directories. Then you want to take a look at your download directory with nice mess. With Filter you can immediately find your media there (one type at a time though)- this is when I use Filter.
An extension of Filter idea may be possibility of defining many sets of 'Items displayed' settings.
Maybe changing Filter icon when filter is applied would lessen confusion?
X.

Another user who had problems, see topic
"filter by image" and [..] bug 1.82.

Another suggestion - 'reset' / change to "custom" filter at xnview start.

I agree with both suggestions. I use filter to temporarily display non-images for renaming, but then I often forget to change it back to 'custom'.
An "inverse of custom" filter would be interesting. It would show what is being filtered out in options.

Yes, there is, if you want to have quick access to common filtering patterns.

I don't like that. New users will have no problem with this since they will take this for granted.

Why? If you need a permanent setting, you can set it in options > Items displayed.

Quick access is the keyword here.

You could make it a pull-down menu as well, so the current filter is always shown.
But i still don't need any of this. I'm already used to it (from other programs).

Yes, but also this should be added:
"'reset' / change to "custom" filter at xnview start."
Otherwise it could be still confusing for some users.
Quick access is the keyword here.
Still don't understand.

Quick access to the most commonly used filter patterns. Got it now?

Yes, but when you need to change it often, why it would be a problem if it would be changed to custom at startup? If you change it often, do you remember what was the last filter when you start PC/xnview?
