Autolevels

I just used autolevels and compared it to the autolevels from GIMP 2.4.5. They do not match. The images gets a bit lighter and gets a bit more contrast when using GIMP. How is it decided how to do the autolevels? And is autolevel lossless on jpg files?

It seems the results are closer when also doing autocontrast in xnview. But I am still interested as to how the transformation is done.
