Yes, Options > General > Display all image types is checked.
Why would XnView recognise the files for the main window and not the Preview Window?

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED?
Because we were running out of options, I tried a different folder. I tried my Pictures folder containg jpg's and any selected jpg had a preview.

I have deleted the ini file two times and restarted XnView with no improvements.

I don't have View > Preview > Show. What I have is this,

I cannot select anything from real size to zoom in the second dialog box.

You suggest from the link,
Perhaps in menu "Tools > Options" | category "Browser > File List" you have unchecked the checkboxes in the column "Show in preview"
From my first post above I said,

Yes, XP. I have never had a preview when selecting a file in the main panel.
The preview is empty. I click once on the full screen view icon. I then hit esc. The preview is occupied.

Out of curiosity, if I double click the Fullscreen icon rapidly twice, the preview pane displays the selected thumbnail!!

I couldn't pick the right words in search to find an answer to this question.
I have v1.98.1 and slecting a file in the main window produces nothing in the preview. I have options > Browser > File List > show in preview all checked. What else do I need to do?
