when scanning recipes and if option is available would it be better to have image in png or another format rather than jpg

I have been a user of XN View on Windows for many years.
but now have converted to Mac.
have downloaded V.86 XNView....it is quite a bit different than I remember. it has been several years since i used it on Windows.
I have my mothers original handwritten (in pencil) cookbooks which I want to scan ...

oh my......
i just did some googling and discovered that i can open and edit using PREVIEW an app that comes with Mac.
sorry...guess i should have googled first before posting.

pdf files opening and editing
i recently downloaded xnview to my mac which i have almost totally converted to from my windows PC.
i used xnview a lot on my PC.
i was wondering if this ghost script file that is required to open pdf files in xnview......is this the only way i can open them.
actually what i was wanting to do ...
