I renamed the main fonts.conf file to old so it no longer counts:
mv /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/fonts/fonts.conf.old
And XnConvert is now working, however, another application may complains:
[user@machine fonts]$ eog&
[1] 1234
[user@machine fonts]$ Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file ...
