If I start a slideshow using the slideshow icon at the top of the interface, it opens up a settings screen, and uses those settings when I start the slideshow.

I figured it out!
What I thought was the categories pane is not the categories pane. To activate the categories pane, I had to right click on the toolbar and click on "categories."
