Can't say about 1.8.4, but in 1.8.6 the bug is still here.
I have Auto zoom setting set to 'Fit image to window' and Reset 'Auto zoom' setting with next/previous file option checked.

Seems, that when I change View - Auto zoom option (between "Fit image to window" and "Fit window to image"), this new option applies only on scrolling and opening another file or on XnView restart. I have explored this issue a little bit more and found, that this issue is actual only on Windows 7 with scaling 125%. But on Windows 7 with scaling 100% and on Windows 10 with scaling 125% all is OK.

When I do manual Zoom In or Zoom Out in "Fit window to image" mode, window stretches or shrinks according to image size * zoom factor. But sometimes scrollbars appear. And when I stretch window size by mouse drag on 1 pixel more large, scroll bars disappear. Most often I see this on 51% zoom.

Maybe my understanding of "Auto zoom - Fit image to desktop" mode is incorrect, please correct me.
