There is one JPEG2000-encoder that preserves metadata including EXIF, Adobe Photoshop's JPEG2000-plugin that writes extended JP2-files. Only odd thing with this is that it seems to use it's own uuid-code so other programs doesn't recognize it, had to check it with hexeditor that it's all in there.

Did same thing like negg except used Background color RGB(180,0,0).
Opened in edit -> Zoomed the picture 400% -> Selected area -> Pressed DEL (Black area appeared) ->
Closed file (with save overwriting) -> Opened file again to see that ...
