The key to Lightroom's success (IMO) is the separation of the navigation function from the filter function.
Yep that's sort of what's needed, but do you not mean separation of the assignment function from the filter function.

No perhaps you don't, you mean that navigating around drives, folders ...

Re: XnView vs. ACDSee: Slow..? (Part 2)

Just curious but whats missing from XnView that you might find in a "professional" DAM product? I changed would to might . Below are some features that come to mind. The yet in my original statement was significant, i.e. you might say "but XNView/Picasa/FPV does that one" - but IMO XNView doesn't ...

Pierre... the category assignment UI ... drag & drop is awkward to use. The only aspect of category assignment I think works well is the Preview's "Set categories..." context menu.

I agree, "drag & drop" is always awkward if the target is small - see footnote. Drag & drop is OKish for ...

I checked their website, but it mentions nothing about support for it.
But that doesn't mean it wont do it, their website is singularly uninformative, and it doesn't have a search function; why not pose the question on their forums, you might get an answer.

I know later versions let you import ...

I am still using v3.1 (the "best" one). They later stopped descript.ion support :(
"[/i]
Viking, I just looked through my notes, they indicate that ACDSee Pro 2.5 has descript.ion support, I don't know whether that's in ACDSee PM. When you say they dropped it - have you checked latest ACDSee PM ...

I know several image viewer (not DAM) that are actually faster than acdsee.
namely: picasa 3 viewer and FastPictureViewer.

I haven't looked as Picasa 3, wouldn't have thought that earlier versions were any faster than XNView. Maybe it's time to take another look.

I think I am right in saying ...

Re: XnView vs. ACDSee: Slow..? (Part 2)

Last year I evaluated mid range Digital Asset Management (DAM) products - ACDSee Pro, Breeze Browser, idImager, IMatch, Lightroom/Bridge, PhotoMechanic etc.

Just out of curiosity, which one came next after ACDSee in terms of browsing speed and which ones supports descript.ion..?

As I said ...

Assign Category to Multiple Images

Is it possible to assign a category to multiple images in a single operation.

Imagine a folder of family holiday photos. I'd like to select all photo's that feature a given family member, and assign it to that persons entry in the catalogue tree.

If I select multiple thumbnails, then ALL the ...

Re: XnView vs. ACDSee: Slow..? (Part 2)

XnView's loading time is comparable to many other image editors and File Managers. It appears that ACDSee is unique! How can they achieve such lightening fast loading times..??

I don't know :-) but they have more than 30 developers on this product :-P
Last year I evaluated mid range Digital ...

Re: Are Categories Working Yet

I have not yet added 'set categories' in view mode, but don't use it the DB can be changed
Thanks, I was concerned that I might be overlooking something obvious.

I won't be using XNView MP for anything meaningful prior to its release, so changes to the D/B schema during development will not be a ...

Are Categories Working Yet

Could someone confirm that the mechanisms to assign categories to images is yet to be implemented.

I can maintain the category tree but I can't find any means of assigning categories to images - there's no Set Categories item in the View menu as there is in the Windows version.

I already did that search, there are multiple solutions to the same problem for different versions.

I think MS solved the DLL Hell problem with Side By Side - see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa376307.aspx. If developers (including MS) used it then I'd only ...

Missing DLL

When I fire up XnView v1.96 I get this error message

This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem -- OK

I press OK and the application starts

Looks like an MS C++ library to me,

I have it in several other apps ...
