Open images from text file list?

Post by JohnFredC » Fri Jan 14, 2011 2:13 pm

I frequently use another tool to collect image filenames from a wide assortment of folders. The tool saves the filenames as a simple list:

Code: Select all

D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3153.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3085.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3086.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3087.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3088.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3089.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3090.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3091.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3092.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3093.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3094.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3095.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3096.JPG
D:\ImagesBackup\Canon_G2\2005\2005_06a\IMG_3097.JPG
My goal would be to pass this list to XnView and have it display the files in a thumbnail pane.

Is there a commandline switch for this in the current XnView (1.97.8)?

Hello,
It's an old suggestion, I support it - see here:
(possibility to import and export a files list to an xnview function (tagged list, a new category, to the browser, to slide show, etc... ) - basket

AFAIK, file lists (.sld) are only accepted in conjunction with the -slide <file> parameter.

Version 0.38 does not appear to have a "Load file list" function.

Loading a text file list of images simply displays the text file itself in a viewer tab.

There IS a Create->File Listing... menu item that works quite well, but MP cannot read the file output by the function to populate a thumbs view containing only the files in the file list.

Am I missing something?

Do you use -filelist mylist.txt?

Ah!!! I misunderstood (was expecting a File menu option).

Yes xnview.exe -filelist mylist.txt does indeed work in v0.38! The browser opens loaded with the images listed in the text file.

Thank you for this feature! Very useful, and I hope it is planned to be integrated into the menu system.

I will test further and report back soon.

MP v.38.1 now has a File->Load file list... menu entry that populates the browser from a list of images stored in a text file. This works great! I have already started using it with lists generated by TC.

In 0.25 there is also a Create->File Listing menu item that allows the user to save a text file with a list of images. This is a powerful tool, with mix and match access to all the image metadata, in addition to the filename and path.

This is a fine, very useful first step!

However, future versions of MP need to address (at least) the following issues:
  • 1. A menu option: File->Save Selection to file list...

    2. A default behavior to populate the File Listing dialog from the files selected in the browser.

    3. A strategy to respond usefully to an attempt by the user to delete a File List member from the browser. What should happen???? Currently there is an error.

    4. What should the folder tree show when the browser displays the contents of a file list?

    5. In the File Listing dialog, a means to save/restore named templates.
Perhaps some of these issues could be addressed by re-envisioning the File List functionality as a feature of an "Image Basket" tool.

Thanks for a great app!

Would it be possible to expand on this file list feature to download a list of image urls?
