Overwriting vs. merging folders

If some existing files or folder have the same name than files from folder that you want to copy or move, they will be replaced.

Do you want to copy or move this folder?

Code: Select all

The target folder already contains a subfolder with the same name.

If the files in the existing folder have the same name as files in the folder you are moving or copying, they will be replaced.

Do you still want to copy or move the folder?

What about something like this:
  • This action will overwrite all files and folders in the destination folder whose names match files and folders present in the source selection.

    Proceed?

Needs work, though.

One might prefer a list of naming conflicts with an ability to fix them (either individually or en masse) before completing the action.

Yes, something like the dialog for replacing files (“File already exists”) would be great.

This is the message (“Confirm Folder Replace”) users are presented with by Explorer in Windows XP...
This folder already contains a folder named 'Foobar'.

If the files in the existing folder have the same name as files in the folder you are moving or copying, they will be replaced. Do you still want to copy or move the folder?

[ Yes ] [ Yes to All ] [ No ] [ Cancel ]
... vs. Windows Vista and 7:
This destination already contains a folder named 'Foobar'.

If any files have the same names, you will be asked if you want to replace those files.

Do you still want to merge this folder
  • Foobar
    Date created: ??/??/???? ??:??
with this one?
  • Foobar
    Date created: ??/??/???? ??:??
[ Yes ] [ No ]
