can not open pdf files

I have just found your program so downloaded latest XnView1.98.7 (Feb27 2012) Libfomat 6.05. I have found I can not open any .pdf files, but other picture files seem to open ok (most I have are .jpg). I'm running on a win7 32bit home premium desktop. Message given is "Format of the file <***.pdf> could not be determined. For display of less common.....".
I have checked the Options section and it says it can read/write .pdf files, and I have ticked the pdf line in the General tab to make sure. These image files can be read by Acrobat Reader 9, and Photoshop7, and give preview images in Explorer.

Is it me/my machine, have I done something silly, is it a bug?

you need to install ghostscript to be able to view pdf
