Macromedia Freehand

Post by murbieta »

Hello guys!

Is probably an old issue but, is there a way to add support for Freehand (fh10, fh11) file formats?

Thanks in advance!!

Support for Macromedia FreeHand files has indeed been requested before.
As you probably know, image viewers like XnView can only extract the embedded thumbnail of proprietary formats.
MSDN Library (Expression Media 2 » Thumbnail view » FreeHand MX) wrote:This information applies to Macromedia FreeHand versions 9.0 and 10.0. It also applies to FreeHand MX (11.0).
FreeHand embeds a small thumbnail when it saves a file. The thumbnails for saved files are 112x112 pixels, in .pict (a color bitmap) format.
Some FreeHand files might have been saved without a thumbnail or preview. As a result, these files display a generic icon.
However, FreeHand has the option Export Preferences that enables you to make sure a thumbnail is added. You can find this option in FreeHand by clicking Preferences on the Edit menu.

Does this mean that xnview is able to read FH9-11 files? If so how can I do to force xnview to read them?

At least Freehand isn't mentioned in the list of supported formats.

Do you know where Pierre (the developer of XnView) can download some samples?
<!-- // EDIT //
  • I'm able to preview logoA.fh11 in XnView v1.98.8 :D
Make sure that Display all image file types in Tools » Options... » General » Operations is activated.

I tested with some FH11 samples and it worked!!

Now I have some more files in previous Freehand file format from FH8 to FH10 that are not displayed with xnview!
You can get them from this link: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1WCyZ ... m84LWM3YlU

Thanks!

It seems that Macromedia changed the structure of the format starting with Freehand MX.

If you open an FH11 sample in a text or hex editor, you'll find a JFIF string at the beginning of the file, which suggests that the embedded thumbnail is in fact a JPEG.

Previous versions of Freehand obviously placed the embedded thumbnails at the very end of the file, and these preview thumbs appear not to be JPEGs.

We'll have to wait & see what Pierre says.
