Add Text to Picture Newbie

This is my first time. I have 200 pics from Picasa and I need to copy the caption (IPTC) to the picture so I can get prints with captions. I searched and I know shift T is involved.

I have the browser with files on the left, thumbnails above and a picture ready to edit. I press shift T and the thumbnails go away. no text box, no clue I need more details.
