The pdf User's Guide (#83) describes how the extract rectangle works. How do I access that function?

Thanks for the answer. I would like to improve the documentation. Is it possible for users to edit the existing documentaion?

The Official XnView Wiki was created to enable users to update and expand the outdated documentation, but you'll have to familiarize yourself with the Writing Guidelines and MediaWiki's markup language to do so.
