0.51: Mac: Crashes on startup

Post by Rabone »

I registered to the group just so I could post this bug report up.
OS: 10.6.8
I have XnViewMP v0.39 on machine and been using it for about two months.
Launched program on 6 AUG 2012 and was told there was an update available.
Downloaded 0.51 and installed.
Launched and used v0.51 all day 6 AUG 2012 with no problems or glitches.
Today, 8 AUG 2012, when I attempt to launch XnView, it crashes. Each.And.Every.Time.
I click to launch from Applications folder; Icon starts to bounce in the Dock.
Icon stops bouncing, XnView starts to draw in full screen, as soon as it hits full screen (this is like just a second of time) it blinks out, and the Icon disappears from the Dock.
No crash report. No way to get it up long enough to even tell what might be happening.

I used CleanMyMac and uninstalled the 0.51 version, re-downloaded it, installed, just to be safe, rebooted.
Same thing happened. Launch, Bounce, Full Screen flash, Crash. Multiple times.
Nothing I could do to make it work like it had on 6 AUG 2012.

I ended up having to uninstall the 0.51 version, and using Time Machine, go back and get the v0.39 app from 6 AUG 2012.
It launched fine. I have tested it multiple times, and it comes up with no problem.

No changes to my system from 6 AUG to today, 8 AUG 2012 other than updating to 0.51

Very odd.

Please try to remove (or rename) the HOME/.xnviewmp folder?
Pierre.

Pierre-
No such folder/directory exists on my machine.
Remember, I ended up having to uninstall using CleanMyMac v0.51 and use Time Machine to restore v0.39

If I download and reinstall v0.51, will there be a folder/directory named .xnviewmp ?

yes after a first startup
Downloaded the .tgz file again into downloads folder.
Double clicked to unzip.
Dragged and drop the xnview logo onto applications folder on dock.
Rebooted.
Opened applications folder from dock, clicked on the xnView icon to launch.
Warning nag about being sure items downloaded from internet, clicked Launch.
Icon shows up, bounces in dock, screen flashes outline of xnView work environment, crashes.
Repeated attempts yield same result - bounce - flash - crash.

I cannot understand why it worked faultlessly that first night, but after reboot and attempts to restart it continues to crash.

Could you try to start it in a shell console?
Pierre.

I can try, but first, I have to know how to do that!
Sorry Pierre, but I am not sure exactly what you are talking about doing.
Give me some step-by-step and I will attempt it.

Hi Rabone,

I once had the same problem and i run XNViewMP 0.50 on Mac OS X 10.7.3

My solution that fixes this issue:

1. Open the file xnview.ini in folder /Users/YourMacUserName/.xnviewmp
with YourMacUserName is your own user name. In order to quickly navigate to this folder,
i use function "Go to Folder..." in menu Go of Finder, just paste the full path and click Go button.

2. Once you open the ini file in TextEdit, please find keyword session= in [Start] group
and delete remain of line after word browser then save the file and start XNViewMP.

To avoid any trouble, please make a copy of this file before you change its content.

Hope this help.
