Save options and userdefined sort

Post by warlock69 »

Hello Pierre-Emmanuel Gougelet,

I want to make the following two suggestions to improve XnView (one of my favourite programs :)):

1. I miss the possibility to save the whole options. I do many modulations in XnView. If I install the program on a new computer, it's hard to do all the modulations again. It would be great, if I could load an options file, that I saved and copied before. There's much space for a "Load options"- and a "Save options"-Button left from "OK" and "Cancel". An alternative could be a .ini file that the user can copy. But my first suggestion would be more convenient.

2. The first thing my brother asked me after I recommended XnView to him was: "Does it have the possibility to do a userdefined picture sort like in Adobe Bridge?". There you can simply move pictures with the mouse from one position to another, so you can break the chosen sort order. This is very useful for sorting vacation pictures. For example, you shot a few pictures much later than others of the same issue. Than you want to move them to that issue. You want to sort by issue.
The solution for this feature could be as follows:
You add "Userdefined" in the sort menu. The user doesn't have to choose this, but if he moves a picture from one position to another, the blue dot automatically changes to "Userdefined". Now it would be important, that XnView automatically saves the sorting for this folder. This hopefully should be no problem because XnView saves the whole picture content of a folder anyway. Now, the user can switch to another sorting if he wants, but if he later selects "Userdefined" again, XnView shoes his own last sorting it kept in mind.
Of course, if you do that, XnView no longer is allowed to dublicate a picture (with the "plus" at the curser), if the user moves it with the mouse. XnView now has to dublicate only if the user presses the Ctrl-Key at the same time. But this is totally OK, because that's exactly what the user is used to when working with the Windows Explorer.
I just came from my vacation, shot many pictures and missed this possibility too. My solution was to sort by name and rename the pictures I wanted to move. But that's pretty inconvenient and time-consuming. A userdefined sort would be a great new feature.

Yours sincerely
Thomas

Ooops! I now saw that my two suggestions seem to work in XnView MP! Wow! Sorry, I should have tested this before.
But my problem is, that I prefer working with XnView because MP sometimes causes severe computer crashes and there are some things different I don't like. But I think I should test and compare it again, maybe the newest version is better than that version I tested many months ago.
But I never really understood the reason for the existence of the two different versions of XnView.
Will you do the "save options" and "userdefined sort" in XnView too?

Oh man, sorry for posting for the third time. I don't want to spam your board. :?
In XnView MP there only exists a "save preset" in the "Browser" section. This only saves the "tooltips" entries. But I speak about saving the whole options.

What do you means by whole option?

Now, I tested XnView MP again. Unfortunately it crashes again and again in normal simple situations, like showing thumbnails, switching from Browser to Viewer and so forth.
I have Windows 7 32 Bit, Intel Core 2 E6300, 2.75 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS.
Are there special system requirements for XnView MP, that I don't fulfill?

Do you have a way to reproduce the crash?

What do you exactly mean with "reproduce"?

Yesterday it crashed, as I double-klicked a thumbnail (623 KB jpg file) to change to the Editor.
Today it crashed, as I tried to change from "User (System)" to "Program (XnView)" in options > system integration > settings > Use .ini file in folder.
At the moment for example it crashes, if I start it and it tries to show all the thumbnails in the last directory (824 jpg files from 158 KB to 2,42 MB, 1 subfolder with 27 jpg files and 1 another subfolder). Now I got over the "start crash" as I immediatly changed to the options dialogue before it could show many files. After closing the options dialogue the program had no more problems with that folder.

I'm so sorry, but unfortunately I have to say at the moment, that it is the most unstable program I ever seen. But surely there is an explanation for this. I'm sure it doesn't crash all the time with other users. Maybe it's a hardware configuration problem. I try to install XnView MP on another computer and test it there.
