convert pictures raw to jpegI

I am new to this forum. I recently found some CDs with some old pictures on them taken years ago and have tried converting them using XnView software. My husband in his past days of photography saved them in raw format and when I have tried to convert them they come out smaller in size and just not very clear at all. Is there some settings I could try on this program that would help or do I have to chuck them all in the garbage. I have only used simple software editing programs like Picaso and ones downloaded on my computer when I purchased it. I am running windows 7. Thanks for any help.

Which format of RAW, do you know?
