Nope, i did mention this in my very first post though. I have no problems with labels in folders where there are few files, lets say less then 40 jpg's. Most of the folders i have contain more than 600, most over 1000 photos. But when i wanted to try this, i copied like 20 images to a new folder, and i had no problem rating them there.

I noticed now that, i don't even have to use "copy to" or "edit with" on files, labels just won't stick. Tried in a folder with 1059 files... labeled the 900th one (don't know exactly but one towards the end of the list) then restarted xnviewmp, blue color label gone.

I have had this problem a number of times but have not been able to fully nail it down until now.
One persistent bug has been as follows:
  • Open one or more jpegs in separate tabs
While viewing the last one opened, close the tab
    XnView crashes
All ratings and colour labels are lost for the current session
This occurs on both Linux Mint 14 / Cinnamon and Ubuntu 12.04

Today's problem appears connected:
  • Open the first jpeg in a folder
In the tab, click through the pictures, setting ratings and colour labels using CTRL and CTRL - SHIFT keys
Return to the browser and select a group of pictures, the use the keys to set ratings and colour labels
Double click the next picture, which opens in another tab, and continue as above, first closing the previous picture tab
At this point all ratings and labels set in the first session are lost
Return to the browser and close XnView - all rating and labels from this session are lost
Some testing:
Hard to get a clear grip on this, but it seems to be connected to the opening of tabs. If ratings and labelsare set, either via keyboard or mouse, with only the browser open, they appear to stick and hold with no problems. Once a picture is opened in a new tab, it all seems to come apart, but sometimes all ratings are lost, sometimes only one or two.

OS is Linux Min 14 / Cinnamon. Current folder has 329 files, all jpeg. XnView is 0.61. The system was a clean install earlier this year, with no database imports. I have had similar problems on Ubuntu 12.04. Use a "normal", older XnView on Windows 7, but that is a work machine which see little photo use, my own are Linux systems.
I have been using XnView MP for a few years for photo organisation, but only recently started using the ratings and labels. On the Linux system I do rate it as the best product available, despite a few frustrating bugs.

OK - I think I have a solution - partial at least.
Went to Tools -> Preferences -> Database, Clicked Optimize, and ticked all of the options.
It now seems to be working, and has recovered all the settings I made last night.
problem in the database?

For me at least, it did not solve it even by recreating a new database from scratch, with all xnview mp settings reset to default, still had it happen.
It's nice to see someone else can reproduce it in one way or the other, it might be connected to the bug i've submitted, so even better. It might be a bug after all, it's just a sneaky bastard one :) nasty to reproduce it accurately.

Heck, all you have to do is click on the folder right above it (or anywhere else) and then click back on the file you were viewing, and Puff! They're gone. Note that you must have a certain number of video files in the folder before they start disappearing (about 40 or 50), and they vary. Good luck with this, you're not alone.

Well if that happens all the time then its awesome, the developer will finally be able to reproduce and fix it.

I've encountered this problem too recently as I've just updated to version 0.61. I didn't notice at first, but I use ratings temporarily to facilitate my picture cataloguing. I've noticed some pictures were displayed in the selected rating but had lost the rating icon marking. I couldn't really say what triggers that bug though. In my config, nothing is written to XMP.

I can confirm that ratings are lost. I tested this on a folder with 237 and another with 14 JPGs. When I select another folder and return to the former all ratings are gone. I optimized the database (all settings checked). Randomly when I reopen the application it immediatly crashes when it loads the images of the last visited folder.
I use Ubuntu 12.04. 64bit. Images are stored on a NTFS data partition.

Oh no ! I had not realized yet but I just found out thousands of pix labelled with color have lost their label -- hours and hours of work which I cannot redo and that is essential to me as it marks pics I've already used. What can I do to get them back. I mean restore a copy of my db will only work if I downgrade and still I have catalogued hundreds of pix recently (hours spent) which will be lost. I do not save to XMP because it ruined many of my pix and slows the program considerably (I have a huge database I use for graphic design). If anyone has any idea how to sort this problem like merging DB or something. I have updated from 0.6 and it was okay. I wish so much I had realized this before starting to catalog more pictures but honestly I got caught up with no enough time and it cost me dear. :(

That's exactly how i use labels and that's also exactly how i found out my labels were gone on a ton of images :( and since i didn't notice it right away, i've deleted my backup db as well :)
The bigger problem is that the dev says he cannot reproduce this bug so i don't know if its gonna get fixed.
