0.61: Very poor JPEG thumbnails quality in XnViewMP

Post by converter »

I've just tried XnViewMP 061 on my Linux system and I've instantly observed that it renders JPEG thumbnails of very low quality, something that did not occur in version 051:furthermore,every possible fix that I could think of,like rebuilding thumbnails, optimizing the database, deleting database entries and finally manually renaming the Xnview.db file to force the progam to rebuild it from scratch, nothing actually worked.

Reinstalling version 0.51,all settings being equal, immediately fixed the issue.

Unfortunately,I did take no screenshots, but I can assure that the issue was really bad:if need be,since I have to keep version 0.51 as it works fine, for testing purposes would it be possible to extract the zipped version of XnViewMP 061 to a temporary folder in my home directory and so have both versions at the same time?

I think I may also have pressed that button, but I can't remember anything happening-anyhow,since I'm now back to version 051,which I have installed using the .deb package, can I also manually extract the zipped (.tgz) version of XnViewMP 061 to a subdirectory of my home folder and have both versions at the same time,so I can do some more testing?

I take that by default they would both use the same .xnviemp directory,so I'll have to manually specify the alternative folders that version 061 will use for its databse and other data in the settings,is that correct?

... Yes, you can ... I did that too (but my configs files are into this subdirectory xnview.ini, *.db files, etc)

Right, as said here since XnViewMP0.61

Code: Select all

...Database has been improved, PLEASE make an backup of it before to install this version...
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=28399
...I take that by default they would both use the same .xnviemp directory...
... Not a good idea to use the same ".xnviemp home directory for the both versions" the xnview.ini file, for example, can also be updated...

PS: Settings\Integration\Settings tab ... for the v0.61 for example use: (program xnview) not (user system)=.xnviemp directory

Code: Select all

o Use ini file in folder

Other settings:
Folder for Database (.db)
Folder for other files

Good,so I'm going to install version 061 again using the compressed archive and keep both versions for comparing/testing.

Of course I don't want them to share the same folders,so is it possible to modify this preference in some configuration file before actually launching version 061? Otherwise I guess I'll have to rename my current setting folders used by version 051,open XnViewMP 061 and change its settings as you've pointed out, than delete the new folders created on startup and rename again the folders currently used by version 051.

OK,I've made some progress:installed the zip archive version of XnViewMP 061 in a dedicated folder, chosen at the start up prompt custom directories for its database and other files (in order to not interfere with the existing 051 version),and launched the program.

Thumbnails were fine up to 96x72,then setting a larger size ruined them again-so I went into the database settings, pressed "Get thumbnail size",then tried to rebuild the thumbnails frm there, which didn't work at first.
Then I changed the size again,a message popped up telling that the new size exceeded the max current size allowed, did the above procedure again but this time I rebuilt the thumbnails from the browser menu instead of the database settings panel, and it finally worked:I have large and high quality thumbnails again.
