Hotkeys, &Accelerators ...

Post by AEN007 »

16October2013

1) Quite a number of XnV menu items have no &Accelerator; e.g.,
File|Recent Files, Tools|CaptureSceen ... & etc ...
I wish each menu item had a UNIQUE &Accelerator;
2) I wish some items that have no HotKey (like Tools|CaptureSceen) had a HotKey.
I also wish I could assign/customize HotKey combos for menu items ...

PS: I also wish XnV would support SINGLE INSTANCE functionality ...
I prefer to open files in to my Apps/Utils via file explorer contextmenus.
Because XnV does NOT support SINGLE INSTANCE functionality,
I cannot open files into XnV via file explorer contextmenus because
that just results in multiple instances of XnV being open ...

I would like to add to my original post that
I wish the XnV "popups" had more/better &Accelerators as well ...
and
I'm to (now) know/see that XnV does have "single instance" ... ;)

There are two concepts for supporting the user when using the keyboard: short cuts and mnemonics.

Shortcuts are a combination of the Ctrl key plus a second key. When using a shortcut, the associated action will be triggered immediately. Shortcuts are listed right to the menu items.
An example: With Ctrl+U you start batch processing.

Mnemonics are used to quickly navigate through menus. When pressing the Alt key, Windows will show all the application's mnemonics in the menu by underling the a letter in the menus' labels. By pressing the underlined key, you open up the appropriate menu and in the menu you will see the menu items with even more mnemonics.
An example: For exiting XnView you can use Alt+F (to open the file menu), and then x (to select the menu item Exit).

For some reason I don't know, mnemonics are used very sparsely in XnView 2.0. I even have the impression that there had been more mnemonics in older versions. There is no mnemonic for Tools>Capture screen. (Alt+T, C, then Enter key works, but that is too cumbersome).

I'm not quite sure what you mean with popups. Do you mean the modal dialogs and message boxes? In the modal dialogs and message boxes (e.g. Rename dialog) you have often have a button marked as default button. By pressing Enter key you select the default button. Typically, the "OK" button is the default button, i.e. you can confirm a dialog by pressing enter. And with "Esc" key (Escape) you can cancel a function.
