Cut & Paste

As there is no support for Drag n' Drop to the folder tree, I next tried to cut & paste the selected image/s to the new folder, but there isn't a "cut" command anywhere. Am I missing something?

This makes xnviewmp almost unusable as an image management tool. The move and copy to dialogs are great when you are repeating the same actions to the same folders, but for a quick transfer of a few images, the interface is tedious. It would be more usable if there was an option to show the current tree position in the move/copy dialogs for when you are moving files back and forth around the same folder. (ie.. sorting images into subfolders)

I was a huge xnview fan when I used to use windows and it was a complete image management solution. I've been waiting years for xnviewmp to mature into usable software for the Linux platform and had high hopes for 0.61, but it seems I might need to wait a bit longer. Not being able to move files around easily is a real deal breaker. With that said it has indeed come a long way from the first few releases I've tried. I hope further development will concentrate on core features a little more.

??? (Again) Yes, IMHO you're missing something.

There IS a Cut command in the right-click menu. Also, the very same command is in the main menu: Edit | Cut. You can use also the shortcut Ctrl+X.

The latest release (0.61) has all these among with a workable (through not complete) drag & drop engine, at least on Windows. See my other response to you.

About the Copy/Move dialogs:

Used correctly these are very powerful tools to organize the files in subdirs. Here how you should use them:

Let's say that you are in the folder C:\myWedding and you want to organize it in subfolders.

1. Select the photos for the first subfolder (let's say that these photos are from wedding's preparations)
2. Press Alt+M - this will bring the 'Move' dialog
3. Delete the folder path there and write 'Preparations' ONLY
4. Press Enter.

This will move all the selected files in a subfolder of c:\myWedding called 'Preparations'.

Do the same for all other folders.

It is much faster than pressing F7, writing down the name of the new folder and dragging the files inside. I know it because I do it all the day. (Btw, drag & drop works from thumbs pane to thumbs pane folder also, besides thumbs pane to tree)

Ctrl+X does nothing as well.
Maybe it's a Linux issue since you are on Windows?

I am also aware that the existing copy/move dialogs are very powerful indeed, but they do not replace a simple drag & drop to move a single picture or 2 into a sub-folder in the tree.
4 steps which also involves writing out the subdirectory name, (not always a simple 1 word name like Preparations) is no contest vs a simple drag to folder.

I have however figured something out. Drag & Drop *DOES* work in the main Folder Tree. I'm always working from the Favorites Tree and there it seems is where the problem lies. Knowing it works in the main tree is a huge help though and makes things workable, so I'm glad you got me to investigate further.

I hope you understand that I really do adore this software and have been chomping at the bit to use it ever since I made the move to Linux. As many alternatives that Linux offers, nothing is as nice and complete as the original xnview. With the ability to drag in the main folders tree now, this is finally ready to replace gthumb and geeqie as my main image management tool. For that I am grateful!

However, speaking about the topic at hand, since Pierre has already the DragAndDropToTree engine in place, (at least theoretically) is much easier for him to add to this engine a parameter/class member called for ex. DestTree in order to cover with a single piece of code both cases.

Also, to complete the 'human' part, having drag&drop to favorites is very important because the Favorites tab usually act as a 'Catalog', most users having there the root(s) of their photo folder(s).

Thank you for the informative reply. I browsed the link you provided and am not afraid to admit that the coding is a bit above my head.
Being able to D&D to the main tree is more than enough for now and I will wait patiently for the Favorites tree to be included.

The missing cut option is a real bummer for me though. I posted it as a bug but have not got any hits yet.
Is this something with my machine, or can anyone else confirm this on Linux?

Hi all,

I almost posted a false issue, but then I made some experiments, and it looks like it is a semi-issue

If you double click on the Folder tree and make it floating - both drag'n'drop and ctrl+C/X/V doesn't work.

If you have a Folder tree "Embedded" in main window - both drag'ndrop and keyboard shortcuts works ok.

I use second option most of the time, but sometimes for better visibility I pop-out the folder tree to do some transfers.
One more not-as-expected behavior: When you double click the Folder tree, the Favorites remains the shown "Embedded" tab behind the Folder tree window (in my case). When I double click the Folder tree again to bring it back among other tabs, the Folder tree is not in focus, the tree is not visible, but the Favorites are.

In both cases - right click menu works OK.

I am not talking about Bugs and Issues, I just want to propose an optimization, so everyone could enjoy even more while browsing pictures with XnViewMP...
