Save With: Associated Programs - Kubuntu 12.04 - 64 bit

Hi Folks,

I'm stuck with a little glitch: I cannot open external editors, or viewers, in XnViewMP 0.61.
* I right click on a pic or vid > Open With > Associated Programs > A progress window opens, 'Examining', for a few seconds and then closes and that's about it.
* I right click again > Open With > Configure Programs > Add > I scroll down to /usr/share/applications/gimp.desktop or vlc.desktop. Then I right click again > Open With > gimp or vlc > and nothing happens.
* In KDE System Settings > File Associations > Image > all png, jpg, gif and the like are associated to Gimp, XnViewMP, Geeqie... and that goes for the vids as well.
* In Geeqie, for instance, Gimp opens at a click.

I'm sure there's something I don't know, or I'm doing wrong, your outstanding work being otherwise flawless and a true pleasure to manipulate files with, but I cannot pin it down.

Any help will be very welcome.

Choose an executable, not a .desktop

Thanks for your answer.
Executable files being .bin and .run in Kubuntu, or so I found on the net, I've done a thorough search for a gimp.bin and gimp.run and vlc.bin and vlc.run, in all the system files, and I've come up with just exactly nothing. In KDE System Settings > Files Associations > all files point out to /usr/share/applications > and down there there is absolutely nothing but .desktop files. So I don't know what to make of it. Could you please point out to that executable file?

I figured it out. I created a StartGimp.sh file that does:

#! /bin/sh
# Starts Gimp for XnViewMP File Associations
#
gimp

Then I right click on a pic > Open With > Configure Programs > Add > I browse down to my StartGimp.sh > And there you go!
