Request: Deleting a file in View...

Post by budz45 »

A combobox setting with the naming of Deleting a file in View: should be considered.

Several times I have deleted an image file (with XnViewMP View mode) while in View mode and I have wished that the tab had auto closed with it instead of the View switching to the next image file to view within the same directory. However on other occasions I have preferred the default behaviour.

The combobox would have two selectable options

Deleting a file in View:
--Closes the view (tab)
--Switch to next file in same directory

The best place for this setting would be in Settings>General>File operations

Yes that is the current behaviour. Just that I suggest a combobox option to offer choice to that current behaviour:
Clipboard 1.png
Clipboard 1.png (26.84 KiB) Viewed 1198 times
A good reason for me suggesting an option is because if a user has other files in the directory that are not image files then XnViewMP would naturally try to switch to those files that it cannot display (exe, pdf, html, etc).

Furthermore a view being closed (tab closing) immediately shows that the file is gone from the system especially when working with multiple tabs of files in XnViewMP.

The fact that the last image stays displayed when deleted is an edge case that needs fixing.
I have nothing against having a configurable behavior choice after a delete action but this edge case will still needs to be addressed nonetheless.

So if this particular issue was the main motivation for your suggestion... I'd say the user option isn't the best way of addressing it.

Perhaps a user option is not needed as Thibaud inclines...So maybe it's better to make the behaviour just close the view tab after the file has been deleted in View mode.

Ok could be better :)

Just wanted to say I didn't really suggested to change the default behavior. but rather invite Pierre to fix the behavior for the edge case (ie close the view only when there isn't any other image to display next)

Aha yes this too, I never realized.

Scenario: I just ran a test by creating a New Folder in Windows and placing a single jpg file in it, I double-clicked the file to open in View mode and then hit the Del key which deletes the file with confirmation but then to my amazement the image file is still displayed (using memory) even though the actual file itself has been sent to Recycle bin. That is the edge case right there I see. I never noticed this before, more of a bug.

Right to resolve both issues of this topic I conclude two things:

1.) Opening an 'only' file from a folder with no other files - The view (tab) should get auto-closed after the file is deleted through XnViewMP view mode.

2.) There should exist the user option that I requested aforementioned with the following important points I make:
Switching to the next file in view after a delete is the existing behaviour that users are familiar with, so to be kept

Switching to the next file, especially in a folder of lots of other images, maintains file viewing continuity of a file list based viewer

HOWEVER even whilst "Switch to next file" is enabled within the combobox setting, then this would not have any affect single file's opened from a folder; in that the view mode tab would still auto-close even when "Switch to next file" is enabled. Please read brief above scenario.
