How to get 'Open with' to work in Linux

Post by jhthayer »

Have been unable to make this work, Kubuntu 12.04, 10.04; have tried *.desktop files, as well as the binaries themselves. Nothing happens. Is there some trick that I am missing?

Thanks,
Joe

EDIT: I just tried the whole process on a different machine and found it worked quite well. I don't know what is the problem with the other one--AMD64 installation both, this one is a newer one by a year or so.
Sorry to trouble anyone about this.

Thanks, again.
Joe

Second EDIT: The 'Open with' > 'Configure' process seems to work with MOST of the applications I have tried, even with Windows apps running under WINE, which is quite fast in the newest version, incidentally, but it won't work with 'Showfoto', on either machine. Since Showfoto is part of DigiKAM, I might try that to see if it will work, but I have installed a number of Windows apps which work, and some new Linux ones, such as Imagj, and they seem to work well. I can't figure out how the linkage works, so I haven't been able to find out what's wrong.

Thanks for any insights,
Joe
