Currently I cannot find the menu item/command in any of the menus to be able to 'Delete selection' of a picture in view mode.
The only way to 'Delete selection' of a picture in view mode is to make a selection and press Del key on my keyboard
Ideally the menu item for 'Delete selection' would go under the "Edit" menu
Without needing the 'Del' shortcut assigned to it (because the 'Del' key shortcut already is assigned to both 'Delete file' and 'Delete selection' in view mode and it could create user confusion)
0.61 Request: Add a menu item to 'Delete selection'

Halo.
If "Delete" vs "Delete Selection" is considered confusing, I think the same issue can be applied to "Copy" vs "Copy Selection" and "Paste" vs "Paste Selection".
What do you think ?
Thanks.

Re: 0.61 Request: Add a menu item to 'Delete selection'
The GUI rules are pretty clear from many years on all OSes: The verb (Open, Cut, Copy, Delete, Copy To, Move To etc.) is applied to selection.
There is always at least one selected file, case in which the verb applies to that single file. IMHO it is more confusing to have Delete File... and Delete Selection..., especially because we are in a graphics-related program where Delete Selection... leads the user to think at something similar with 'fill with the background color the masked(selected) area from the image'
Hence I think that the OP's request has some reasoning, but I'd rather change the menu entries. In the File menu I'd write 'Delete File...' instead of Delete... and in Edit menu I'd add 'Clear...' or, perhaps better, 'Clear Selection...'.

No it's not confusingquapurna wrote:Halo.

"Delete" = in view mode, not making any selection on the picture but pressing 'Del' which deletes the file
"Delete selection" = in view mode, drawing a selection on the picture with your cursor and pressing 'Del' to delete only a portion of the picture (not delete the whole file)
"Copy" = in view mode, pressing Ctrl+C or it's command from menu, will copy the file itself
"Copy selection" = in view mode, pressing Ctrl+C only after drawing a selection with cursor, will copy a selected portion of the picture but not copy the file itself
It does make sense and as m.Th. has said this is how it has been on XnView for all OS platforms for many years and should not change.
In my original post above I was merely remarking that there is no menu item for "Delete selection" which there could be if Pierre agreed that it could be added but while we are at it also "Copy selection" menu item too could be added next to it > under the 'Edit' menu bar
monsieur Pierre we await your call

So the command and shortcut already exist in XnViewMP it is just to add this menu entry for 'clear'. Thanks.
